State Senator Shelley Mayer and Assemblymember Chris Burdick announced today they submitted a joint brief, along with Westchester County and members of the Legislature within NYSEG/RG&E territory, urging the Public Service Commission (PSC) to make affordability the top priority during the NYSEG rate case.
The current rate case, in which Senator Mayer and Assemblymember Burdick are parties, has gone into litigation and will be decided by the Department of Public Services (DPS) Judges, and then the full PSC.
The joint brief calls upon DPS and PSC to prioritize affordability for residents and small businesses and limit excessive profits for utility companies by shifting the burden from ratepayers to shareholders, who are reaping the profits, but are not feeling the strain on ratepayers.
Senator Mayer and Assemblymember Burdick said, “New York families deserve a utility and energy system that puts them first. The rate increase proposed by New York State Electric & Gas (NYSEG) falls short of that basic standard. It prioritizes shareholder returns over ratepayers, and that is simply unacceptable. It is fundamental to protect New Yorkers and ensure accountability. It is time to put people first and to reaffirm that in New York, the public interest comes before all else.”
