The City of Yonkers held its annual Gold Star Mothers Ceremony at the Gold Star Mother memorial in Van der Donck Park on September 29. Gold Star Mother’s Day is observed to recognize and honor those who have lost a son or daughter in the service of the U.S. armed forces.

“I’ll never know our Gold Star Mothers’ feelings after losing their child, nor do I wish that upon any parent. May you find some solace in knowing here in Yonkers, we support you, salute you, and honor you for your commitment to our nation and your children who paid the ultimate sacrifice,” said Mayor Mike Spano.

Hope Hollinsworth-Coaxum, a Gold Star Mother from Yonkers, made comments, as did Rev. William Norman. Also in attendance was State Senator Shelley Mayer, Councilwoman Shanae Williams and members of the Yonkers concerned female Veterans.

The Yonkers Police Honor Guard presented the colors, and Boy Scout Troop 47 performed a flag folding ceremony and presented the American Flag to the Gold Star Mothers.

Junior Idol Carly Tauber sang God Bless America. Linda Pineda led the group in the Pledge of Allegiance. Minister Jim Antonucci delivered the opening prayer. Nicole Toro sang the National Anthem.

The Gold Star is presented to mothers who have lost a son or daughter in service and comes from the story of Michael the Archangel, who flew from the Heavens toward the Earth to comfort a mother who had lost her son.
