How to Talk to Your Parents About Assisted Living

When you notice your parents struggling to manage their daily chores on their own, your first instinct is to provide help, but considering your job and family responsibilities, this approach is not realistic in the long run.

So a better option is to look for senior living options that provide the right kind of assistance for your aging parent’s needs. But there is one problem with this option: most parents want to spend their remaining years in the home where they spent their whole lives. You will have to convince them to move to senior living. Talking randomly won’t help, so here is a systematic approach to effectively convey the idea of shifting to a senior living facility to your aging parents.

Start Conversation Early

Children don’t just decide on a random day that they want to shift their parents to a senior living facility like SHINE® Memory Care in Atlanta. They notice a series of random moments of helplessness that their aging parents are experiencing. In addition to that, if signs of memory loss and cognitive decline are also present, then memory care becomes the only viable living option for them.

The first time you notice your parents neglecting self-care and struggling to manage daily chores, you should talk to them right away. At first, just try to listen and understand how they are coping with their declining health and how they are planning to improve the quality of their lives.

After listening, try to convey your concerns and how you think shifting to senior care can help. In the first conversation, they might resist or reject the idea completely, and that’s fine. Your goal for now is to just initiate this conversation at home.

Discuss the Benefits of Senior Living

After listening to your parents’ opinions on their declining health and how they want to be cared for, you can help them understand how senior living is a good option for them. Tell them all the ways they will receive care and assistance at a senior living facility like Heartis Buckhead. Along with explaining how these facilities assist with daily tasks and disease management, you should also tell them about the various activities they can participate in within the facility.

Even after all the discussion, they still don’t consider shifting to senior living. You can take them to visit the facility in person. When they notice other residents living happily, the idea of moving won’t feel so scary to them anymore.

Consider their Opinion

Even if you think moving your parents to senior living is the best option for them, you cannot make the final decision alone. You can try to convince your parents, but until they completely agree to move, you cannot make the decision on their behalf. You have to value their opinion.

Try to convince them by repeatedly highlighting the benefits of senior living and helping them realize why this is the right decision for them, but all decisions should be made together.

Conclusion

Deciding on a new home for your parents is not an easy task. Children often feel that finding the best senior living facility is the tricky part, but the real task is helping their parents understand why moving to senior living is necessary.

Parents are attached to the home they have lived in their whole life, so to convince them, you should start the conversation early. Bring up the topic repeatedly. Tell them how they will be cared for and how they will have the opportunity to make new friends in the facility. Finally, make the decision by mutual agreement, and don’t force your parents to move until they are fully convinced.
