The Stanley Cup, the most famous trophy in sports, came to Westchester and the City of New Rochelle on July 17 thanks to New Rochelle native Kevin Shattenkirk. Shattenkirk was a member of the Stanley Cup winning-Tampa Bay Lightning in 2020 but because of COVID last year, there was no way to travel around the country with the cup, like usual NHL champs do.

So Shattenkirk waited a year to bring the cup to his home town of New Rochelle, paying a visit to New Rochelle City Hall and to Iona Prep, where he attended school. The Tampa Bay Lightning won a second Stanley Cup this year, 2021, but Shattenkirk was 32 and who has played 13 years in the NHL, including 2 years for the NY Rangers, played in 2021 for the Aneheim Ducks.

Shattenkirk also visited a few of his favorites eateries in New Rochelle, and was pround that Hockey was “flourishing” in the city and that he would do what he could to support it. Members of the Iona Prep hockey team and coach Peter Vasapolli welcomed Shattenkirk and the cup.  He was also a member of the 2014 U.S. Olympic Hockey Team
