The Boys from Peekskill in the American Civil War

 And the Hillside Cemetery Cannon

Saturday, August 1, 2026 at 2:00 pm with Local Historian Tim Warn

Nearly 700 men from Peekskill and Corlandt served the Union in the American Civil War. Scores would not return home, and hundreds would carry the evidence of their deadly service for the rest of their lives. In addition to caring for the graves of their comrades lost at battles such as The Wilderness, Cold Harbor, and Ft. Fisher, the surviving veterans and their community erected a memorial that towers nearly 50 feet above Monument Park. Another memorial to these men can be found in Hillside Cemetery, where a large cannon was placed in the 1890s. But where did it come from, who brought it to Peekskill, and how do you transport a 9,000 pound artillery piece over great distances? Some of these answers were lost over time – until an 1898 newspaper article was uncovered in the archives of Peekskill’s Field Library. Learn the details from the man who found the story – Tim Warn, who will also discuss some of the local men who served in the war and what became of them, as well as the story of the recent restoration project and the remounting of that “big gun” at Hillside

Were they finally equal? Hardly.
