Majority Leader Stewart-Cousins & ShopRite Hosts Annual Turkey Drive

More than 200 turkeys delivered to those in need thanks to partnership with ShopRite and community organizations

For the third year, State Senate Majority Leader Andrea Stewart-Cousins and ShopRite of Greenway Plaza joined forces to distribute 200 turkeys at the Senator’s annual Thanksgiving Turkey Drive in Yonkers.

Sen. Stewart-Cousins’ annual initiative is made possible through her ongoing partnership with ShopRite, which donated 100 turkeys to the program, and collaboration with key community partners, including PCNY and the Youth and Senior Empowerment Foundation, which each donated 50 turkeys to the effort. Monday’s event at ShopRite distributed turkeys and side dishes to families and community organizations in Yonkers and throughout Westchester

“Thanksgiving is a time to reflect on our blessings and extend generosity to those around us. However, food insecurity is a challenge too many of our neighbors face every day, and the holiday season brings these struggles into even sharper focus,” said Senate Majority Leader Andrea Stewart-Cousins. “By providing these meals, we hope to bring relief and joy to hundreds of families who might otherwise go without. I extend my deepest thanks to ShopRite of Greenway Plaza, the Youth and Senior Empowerment Foundation, and PCNY for their partnership.”

Among those receiving turkeys Monday were grandparents who participate in the Senator’s annual “Angel Project,” which pairs grandparents who are primary caregivers to their grandchildren with “angels,” donors from the community who help fulfill their holiday wishlist.

“At ShopRite, our mission is to stamp out hunger in our communities, so we are proud to partner with Sen. Stewart-Cousins to give back to the community and ensure that all families have a meal, especially at Thanksgiving” said Tony Miles, manager of ShopRite of Greenway Plaza. “The Majority Leader’s Angel Project is such a wonderful initiative, honoring grandparents who take care of their grandchildren and giving back to them, and at ShopRite we are proud to be helping make sure that they’re having a great Thanksgiving dinner.”

Other local partners, including Family Service Society of Yonkers, Family Ties of Westchester, Theodore D. Young Community Center of Greenburgh, Little Village Daycare at Children’s Village, Dominican American Cultural Club of Yonkers, Yonkers Community Action Program, Dare to be Different Westchester Inc.,and the Rock of Salvation Church in Sleepy Hollow will help distribute these turkeys to families in time for Thanksgiving.
