Byrne Passes Legislation to Help Pave Way for Renewable Energy Project in Yorktown

Yorktown Supervisor Matt Slater with Assemblyman Kevin Byrne visiting the construction location at the Granite Knolls Sports & Recreation Complex

Assemblyman Kevin Byrne is pleased to announce the passage of legislation he authored (A07590A) to allow the Town of Yorktown to lease town property for a renewable energy project. Specifically, this change will permit the town to lease a portion of land on the Granite Knolls Sports & Recreation Complex to HESP Solar for the construction of a solar canopy, energy storage system, and four electric vehicle-charging stations.

“The passage of this bill is the result of a lot of hard work from our colleagues in local and state government,” said Byrne. “By passing this enabling legislation, we are able to support this important project with both the town and HESP Solar, providing great potential to positively serve the town and its residents financially and environmentally for years to come.”

Town of Yorktown Supervisor Matthew Slater added, “This legislation enables Yorktown to proceed with a milestone renewable energy project at our Granite Knolls Sports Complex. This project with HESP will serve the environment by installing a solar energy canopy, battery storage and electric vehicle charges all of which will generate critical revenue for our Parks and Recreation Department without putting the burden on local taxpayers. We thank our partners on the State level for making this happen.”

Since joining the New York State Assembly in 2017, Assemblyman Byrne has introduced and passed 21 bills, all with sweeping bipartisan support. Sixteen of which have already been signed into law by the governor.

The Senate version of this bill (S06553), carried by Senator Peter Harckham, passed the Senate earlier this year and now awaits the signature of Governor Cuomo to become law.
