Congressman Lawler Ask Gov. Hochul What’s the Plan on Hudson River Radioactive Dump?

On Aug. 11, Congressman Mike Lawler and Congressman Marc Molinaro released the following statement after sending a letter to Governor Hochul asking her for a detailed plan regarding the scheduled dumping of radioactive water from the decommissioned Indian Point Energy Center into the Hudson River.

“It is simply beyond comprehension that Governor Hochul would not have a concrete plan regarding the scheduled discharge and dumping of radioactive water from Indian Point into the Hudson River,” said Congressman Lawler. “She should be exploring every option and it is simply unfathomable that her administration does not have a plan at this stage.”

“Governor Hochul must provide answers regarding the status of S6893 – which passed through the State Legislature months ago, her plans to retain the critical union jobs that are hosted at the site of the plant, and any measures her team has put in place regarding the potential dumping of this radioactive water into the Hudson River,” concluded Congressman Lawler. “My constituents in the 17th District and the residents of the Hudson Valley deserve nothing less.”

“I’ve spent decades fighting to clean up the Hudson River. We cannot take a step backward. I urge Governor Hochul to sign legislation into law to prevent radioactive waste from being dumped into the Hudson River,” said Congressman Molinaro. “This is a commonsense step to preserve this natural treasure.”

Congressman Lawler has previously criticized Holtec International for the lack of transparency in its decommissioning of Indian Point Energy Center in Buchanan and had urged them to evaluate all possible options for the safe removal of radioactive wastewater.

“It is imperative that Holtec operate with transparency and that the decommissioning of Indian Point is done in an environmentally responsible way that does not disrupt our Hudson Valley communities or soil our beautiful Hudson River,” Representative Lawler said earlier this year.
