One hundred and twenty-five years ago, Feb. 9, 1893, the Yonkers Public Library was officially chartered by the State of New York, signed personally by Melvil Dewey himself. Since then, the library has established itself as a premier public service to the Yonkers community and beyond.

To commemorate this significant milestone, the library will roll-out a series of programs highlighting the institution’s rich history, as well as celebrations for patrons of all ages.

“The library’s year-long Quasquicentennial celebration will honor our great libraries in myriad ways,” said Ed Falcone, director of the Yonkers Public Library. “We have collaborated with staff and volunteers, as well as our outstanding board and supportive community to plan meaningful and memorable programs that celebrate our history and set a bright and exciting course for the future. I invite everyone to take part in and enjoy the Yonkers Public Library’s 125th birthday.”

In 2018, the library invites the community to celebrate its 125th anniversary with special programming that honors the past and looks toward the future. One such program is the introduction of the 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten initiative.

The 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten initiative promotes early literacy by encouraging parents and/or caregivers to read 1,000 books with their child(ren) before they start kindergarten. Kick-off parties will feature a musical and magic show, storytelling, crafts, program information and free books for parents that sign their children up for the program. More information is available in the children’s department at each location.

Celebrations are scheduled Saturday, Marcy 24, at 11 a.m. at the library’s Crestwood Branch, at 12:30 p.m. at the Grinton I. Will Library, and at 3 p.m. at the Riverfront Library.

The 125th anniversary is a reminder that capturing and preserving Yonkers’ history provides a richer understanding of the community for both past and future generations. The library encourages residents to share their stories and photographs, particularly any special moments that were spent in any of the Yonkers libraries through the new state-of-the-art Local History Incubator at the Grinton I. Will Library
