YHS Varsity Cheer Team: A Season of Success

As the new cheerleading season dawned upon us, the YHS Varsity Cheer Team was faced with a significant change transitioning from a co-ed team to an all-girl team. This change brought a series of challenges, but their determination and unity prevailed as they embarked on their season of success.

One of the initial obstacles encountered was the lack of practice space. With other teams in their usual gym area, they were left scrambling to find alternative areas for practice. Despite this setback, the YHS Varsity Cheer team refused to let it hinder their progress. They utilized any available space to perfect their routine and sharpen their skills. Their hard work paid off when they secured a first place victory at Arlington and a third place victory at Westchester County Center, showcasing their dedication and talent on the mat. .

However, their season was not without its share of setbacks. During their last practice before their senior competition, they faced a last-minute change due to unforeseen circumstances. Their main back spot in the pyramid suffered a concussion leaving them with a crucial gap in their formation and needing to change their pyramid days before competition. Hours before the competition one of their other stunt groups’ base, had to be replaced due to sickness further complicating their routine and chances of winning. Yet, their team rallied together with motivation and adaptability by adjusting their formation, reorganizing their routines, and providing support to their injured teammates and those who stepped in at the last minute, leading them to a well-deserved victory of first place at Somers.

As the season came to an end, the team had the opportunity to showcase their hard work and skills to their family, friends and school community. Their end of season showcase was a celebration of all their accomplishments. Amidst the excitement of their showcase, they also took a moment to honor their senior, Caitlin Pinto, who was nominated for and received a WPRDDCA Cheerleading Senior Scholarship, a prestigious award that recognizes outstanding achievements in cheerleading and provides support for higher education. Their journey was not just about winning competitions, but about overcoming obstacles and growing stronger as a team.
