Westchester County Celebrates Pride With LGBTQ+ Flag Raising

On June 1st, around 12:00 PM EST, Westchester County officially launched Pride Month with its annual LGBTQ+ Pride Flag Raising Ceremony in White Plains, NY. The event was hosted by the Westchester County LGBTQ+ Advisory Board in partnership with County Executive Kenneth W. Jenkins and the Westchester County Board of Legislators. Local leaders, advocates, and residents gathered to celebrate and reaffirm their commitment to equality, inclusion, and visibility for the LGBTQ+ community.

Held in front of the Michaelian Office Building, the ceremony was a spirited and heartfelt occasion, reflecting Westchester’s values of unity and acceptance. Community members waved rainbow flags, embraced one another, and listened as speakers emphasized the importance of standing strong together in the face of growing national tensions.

Mayor Tom Roach of White Plains, who attended the event, offered a poignant reflection during a personal interview with Yonkers Rising. “Getting to know each other better is an antidote to a lot of the negativity that’s out in the world right now,” Roach said. His words echoed the theme of the day—connection as a tool for change and progress.

County Executive Kenneth W. Jenkins, a visible and vocal supporter of diversity and equity, stood with pride beside LGBTQ+ leaders and allies. His presence underscored the County’s unwavering support for its LGBTQ+ residents, especially during a time when many communities across the nation are facing increased discrimination and division.

“I was proud to join our LGBTQ+ Advisory Board and community members to raise the Progress Pride Flag,” Jenkins said in a brief post on Instagram. “After, I stopped by Westchester Pride to stand with thousands who gathered to celebrate the strength, creativity, and love that defines our community.”

The flag raising not only celebrated progress but also served as a reminder of the work still to be done to ensure safety and equality for all. The rainbow flag, flying high above the County offices, was both a symbol of resilience and a call to action.

As the colors of Pride waved over White Plains, the atmosphere was one of joy, solidarity, and hope. The ceremony set a powerful tone for the month ahead, reminding everyone that in Westchester County, love wins, and every resident deserves to be seen, heard, and valued.
