Honors Westchester Jewish Council and Suzi Oppenheimer

Board of Legislators with Suzi Oppenheimer

BOL Chair Vedat Gashi and Legislator Judah Holstein with members of the Westchester Jewish Council

The Westchester County Board of Legislators celebrated Jewish American Heritage Month on Monday evening with a ceremony honoring two community leaders: Westchester Jewish Council, a nonprofit that serves the County’s more than 130,000 Jewish residents by connecting hundreds of affiliated organizations, and Suzi Oppenheimer, former State Senator, Mayor of Mamaroneck, and champion for education reform and environmental stewardship.

Chairman Vedat Gashi (D–New Castle, Ossining, Somers, Yorktown) welcomed guests and said, “We are honored to again celebrate Jewish American Heritage Month by recognizing the Westchester Jewish Council’s 50 years of advocacy and community building, and trailblazer Suzi Oppenheimer’s record of principled public service. The work of these honorees reflects the Jewish values of pursuing justice and doing good deeds to heal the world. Their steadfast commitment to improving the lives of others through organized effort has deeply shaped Westchester, for which the Board extends its gratitude.”

Majority Leader Judah Holstein (D–Eastchester, New Rochelle, Tuckahoe) said, “At a time when antisemitism is becoming more prevalent and more visible in our local communities and beyond, the mission of the Westchester Jewish Council has never been more vital. Their work to engage, unite, and protect our community while building bridges and strengthening ties with the broader community is essential to our future and our security.”

Legislator Anant Nambiar (D–Larchmont, Mamaroneck, Rye Neck, Rye, Harrison) said, “It is a profound honor to recognize Senator Suzi Oppenheimer, whose decades of tireless service as Mayor of the Village of Mamaroneck and our State Senator have left an indelible mark on the Larchmont, Mamaroneck, and Rye communities she calls home. Through her leadership on the boards of the UJA-Federation of Larchmont/Mamaroneck and the Westchester Community Opportunity Program, Suzi has perfectly embodied the Jewish value of Tikkun Olam—repairing the world—by championing the education of our children and the protection of our environment for all Westchester families.”
