Tis the Season to Give Back; Support Team Happy Feet by Donating Socks for the Homeless

By Dan Murphy

As we enter the Holiday season, it is important for all of us to try and give back to those who need a little bit of cheer. The O’Brien sisters from Yonkers and their organization, Team Happy Feet, give us that opportunity.

Team Happy Feet is an initiative run annually by O’Brien sisters Siena (18), Stella (17), and Michaela (14) for the past 13 years. The idea, created by their parents, was to host a Thermal Sock Drive every Thanksgiving to support the homeless and to remind the girls of the importance of helping those who are vulnerable or less fortunate. Instead of a big birthday party each year, the girls hosted the sock drive and invited family and friends for a get-together, a cup of tea, and some treats.

Over the years, the event has grown from their family home to the Aisling Irish Community Center, where many friends and supporters from the community now join the girls and bring socks. Warm socks are one of the most requested items for people living on the streets or in shelters.

Siena, now attending Loyola University Maryland, Stella, a senior, and Michaela, a freshman at Maria Regina High School in Hartsdale, plan to continue this tradition for many years to come. Their efforts have brought comfort and joy to many throughout the winter months. The trio were recognized by the Irish Echo as recipients of the 2024 Community Award, and Siena and Stella have twice received the St. Vincent’s Hospital Community Award for the success of their sock drive.

This year, Team Happy Feet is asking for even more support, as homelessness continues to rise and the need for warm socks has grown significantly. Donations will go to the Irish Volunteers for the Homeless, the YWCA, and Fr. Brendan Fitzgerald of St. Barnabas.

They welcome everyone to stop by on Sunday, November 30th at the Aisling Irish Community Center between 11:00 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. You can also ship or drop off socks directly to the Center. Please include your name and contact details so they can thank you personally.

Let the example of selflessness provided by the O’Brien sisters be an example for all of us to give back this holiday season.
