Six Maria Regina High School students who spearheaded the school’s Powder Puff football game community fundraiser to help support the mission of White Plains Hospital Center for Cancer Care were recently honored by the Town of Greenburgh Board.

The game, that was played entirely by young women at Maria Regina’s Sisters of the Resurrection Sports Complex, underscored the continuing commitment of the renowned all-girls Catholic high school to raise awareness about the importance of prevention and routine screening for the early diagnosis of breast cancer.

Paul Feiner, Greenburgh Supervisor, lauded the students’ initiative and presented them with certificates of achievement during a ceremony held at the start of the Board meeting held at  Greenburgh Town Hall. Maria Regina is based in Hartsdale which is part of the Town of Greenburgh.

The student honorees included Grace Giacinto, who came up with the idea for the Powder Puff fundraiser, and Olivia Maskara, Julia Commisso, Megan Donohoe, Sofia Mora-Parmalee and Nicole Seery.

In addition, the students presented a check in the amount of $1,000, representing the amount that was raised, to Jill Shulmann, AVP of the hospital’s Cancer Services.

Shulmann thanked the students, faculty and administrators “who made this generous gift possible.” adding: “Because of your generosity and that of others, White Plains Hospital’s Center for Cancer Care is able to continue to grow many supportive services such as transportation support, genetic counseling services, art therapy, cancer navigation and much more to support our patients every step of the way.  These vital supportive services complement the advanced and specialized medical care provided at the cancer center, ensuring we can meet the broad range of needs of our patients and their families.“

Principal Maria Carozza-McCaffrey (Class of ’99) said: “White Plains Hospital Center for Cancer Care, a pillar of excellence in the diagnosis and treatment of breast cancer, means a lot to our Maria Regina family. Our students, impacted by how breast cancer has touched the lives of loved ones, mobilized efforts to make this community fundraiser a success. We are so proud of their achievement and congratulate them on earning this very prestigious recognition by the Greenburgh Town Board.”
