The Hudson River Community Association of Northwest Yonkers held its 40th annual “Unsung Heroes” dinner May 18 at Riverview Caterers. The evening is also an opportunity to give scholarships to hardworking high school seniors in Yonkers heading off to college.

This year, students Taija Da Costa, Michele Vaquero and Emani Peteson-Ridley were the three worthy recipients of an HRCA scholarship. As an added “congratulations,” City Councilman Anthony Merante presented the three recipients with Apple laptop computers to take with them to college, courtesy of Westchester Kitchen & Bath, located on Saw Mill River
Road, from partners City Councilman Anthony Merante and Chris
DiMarco.

Also among the “Unsung Heroes” recognized was the Yonkers Auxiliary Police. On behalf of the unit, Auxiliary Chief Joe Sciascia was presented with an award by the HRCA board, with assistance from First Deputy Chief Timothy Hodges.

You may often see the Yonkers Auxiliary Police working events with #YonkersPD members. The mission of the auxiliary unit is to be prepared and ready to be deployed in order to support YPD by providing supplemental service. The underlying purpose of the organization is to mitigate against, prepare for, respond to, and recover from an emergency. When activated, the members serve as peace officers to safeguard the community, to preserve order, and to manage traffic at public functions and events.

Other “Unsung Hero” honorees included: Norma Silva, Phil Giller (Riverriders HPRC),
and Chevaughn Dixon (Riverriders).

The HRCA president thanked all in attendance for continuing the tradition of this community organization.
