Many of us remember the excitement of preparing for the first day of school: a brand new backpack, a fresh haircut and eight hours of restful sleep. The air in the school was full of excitement, a bit of nervousness and the potential of new opportunities.
But for the children of Westchester families facing hunger, the experience is different. They’ll show up to school tired and undernourished, starting the year at a disadvantage.
Today, 41% of Westchester households are at risk of hunger, and unfortunately, a solution to this crisis won’t come from outside our community. It’s up to us to ensure every student has the fresh, healthy meals they need to thrive.
