Eastchester Police Investigating Theft of Car with Child Inside

Don’t Leave Your Car Running with Child Inside!

On March 2 at 10 am, Eastchester police received a 911 call reporting a vehicle which had been stolen while parked in the Green Knolls section of town. The vehicle was left running with the key inside. A child had also been left in the running vehicle.

The owner of the vehicle was the in immediate vicinity of their vehicle and escorting another uninvolved child to the bus stop. The owner observed a male enter their vehicle and attempted to stop the male before he drove away from the scene with the child inside.

The vehicle proceeded to Scarsdale Ave. at Harney Road, where the suspect stopped and removed the child from the vehicle. Witnesses state that after the suspect removed the child from the vehicle, he attempted to reenter the stolen vehicle, but once he was observed by the witnesses he fled the scene in another awaiting vehicle. The awaiting vehicle was last seen on Harney Road near the Bronx River Parkway.

The victim and witnesses describe the suspect as a male black, approximately 20 years old, 6 feet tall with a thin build and dreadlocks. Witnesses state that the suspect’s vehicle wanted in connection was a White Audi SUV occupied by four black males and a black female, in their late teens or early twenties.

The stolen vehicle was recovered, and the child who had been in the vehicle was found to be unharmed and quickly reunited with their parents. We are fortunate that no one was harmed in this incident. Unfortunately, over the past two years, we have seen a significant increase in the number of stolen automobiles along with larcenies from vehicles. As always, we remind residents to remain vigilant of their surroundings, never leave their vehicle running unoccupied, never leave their key inside the vehicle, and be sure to lock their devices especially overnight.

Our department is continuing to investigate this incident and we ask that anyone who has any knowledge, witnesses, or has video recording of the incident to contact our detective division at 914-961-3464, writes Chief Joseph Rodriquez.

Updated by EPD on March 2-The suspect vehicle has been located in New Jersey and is impounded. The vehicle was located on the side of the roadway where it had been abandoned. The vehicle had been reported stolen several days ago from a municipality in New Jersey. Our detective division is working dilligently investigating the case to indentify the suspects involved.

We would like to thank all of the law enforcement agencies that assisted with the investigation, especially the Westchester County Police Department.
