Congressman Mike Lawler Signs Discharge Petition Aimed at Forcing Vote on Ukraine, Israel and Taiwan Aid, and Border Security

Rep. Mike Lawler

On March 12, Congressman Mike Lawler (NY-17) released the following statement after signing onto Congressman Brian Fitzpatrick’s (PA-01) discharge petition to force a floor vote on the Defending Borders, Defending Democracies Act (H.R.7372). Lawler is one of the original cosponsors of the bill and was one of 9 members who signed its discharge petition today (6 Republicans and 3 Democrats).

“We are in the most precarious circumstances since the lead up to World War 2, which is why it is imperative that we get aid to our Democratic allies in Ukraine, Israel, and Taiwan,” said Congressman Lawler. “In addition, the failure of the Biden administration to secure our borders and stop this massive influx of migrants has created a humanitarian crisis and a national security catastrophe across the country.”

“This legislation is critical towards ensuring we not only secure our own borders and protect our national security, but defend democracies across the globe,” continued Congressman Lawler. “Today, I joined together with a bipartisan group of colleagues to sign a discharge petition aimed at advancing this legislation to the floor of the House for a vote. The time for action is long overdue.”

“I came to Washington to advance common sense solutions, and the Defending Borders, Defending Democracies Act is just that,” concluded Congressman Lawler. “It is my sincere hope that the rest of my Democrat and Republican colleagues will join me in this effort.”

New York’s 17th Congressional District is just north of New York City and contains all or parts of Rockland, Putnam, Dutchess, and Westchester Counties.
