Biaggi on the Overturning of Roe: “Establishment Democrats Failed to Take GOP Seriously and Protect Our Rights”

State Senator Allesandra Biaggi, democratic candidate for Congress in NY-17

“Sean Patrick Maloney just helped elect an anti-choice Democrat in a Texas — it’s time for a new generation of Democratic leaders”

“We need true progressive leaders in Congress who will take bold action to protect our rights, not just make empty promises”

State Sen. Alessandra Biaggi, Democratic candidate for Congress in NY-17, issued the following statement today following the release of the Supreme Court decision on Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization:

“The United States Supreme Court’s radical decision to eliminate the constitutional right to abortion makes it clear: we need true progressive leaders in Congress who will take bold action to protect us, not make empty promises. Today’s decision was no surprise. Republicans have been openly and vocally working to dismantle Roe for decades. For too long, establishment Democrats have failed to take Republicans seriously and protect our right to an abortion. Enough is enough.

“Four years ago, I ran for the State Senate promising to pass abortion protections in New York State. They had been held up by a corporate Democrat who gave control to Republicans and blocked the laws needed to protect women. In my first month of office, we passed the Reproductive Health Act, finally codifying Roe in New York. We need this same urgency in Congress.

“Sean Patrick Maloney just helped elect an anti-choice Democrat in Texas. How can my opponent ask women to trust him while propping up  anti-choice incumbents? It is time for a new generation of Democratic leaders who will stop at nothing to protect our rights and values — especially the right to an abortion.

“We know the Republicans’ next goal is a total national ban on abortions and on many types of birth control. We must take them at their word and elect members of Congress who will protect all of our rights, expand the Courts, and abolish the filibuster.”

Senator Biaggi is a Democratic State Senator and a proven winner. In 2018, she defeated the powerful head of the group that kept Republicans in power to put Democrats back in control of New York’s State Senate. Since taking office, Senator Biaggi has been working to create a more equitable New York, delivering wins for working families and paving the way for progressive Democrats to run for office and win.
