Domestic Violence in the Hispanic Community

WESTCHESTER COUNTY OFFICE FOR WOMEN (OFW) HOSTS OCTOBER EMPOWER HOUR IN OBSERVANCE OF DOMESTIC VIOLENCE AWARENESS MONTH

Domestic Violence in the Hispanic Community

(White Plains, NY) – For the final in a series of meaningful activities related to Domestic Violence Awareness Month, the OFW held its October Empower Hour webinar on domestic violence in the Hispanic community.OFW Acting DirectorCatherine Borgia was joined by Jackeline Agudelo, Executive Director of the United Community Center of Westchester. They shared an in-depth and, at times, deeply personal discussion about how domestic violence is experienced in the Hispanic community. Some of the items they touched on were how expectations rooted in Hispanic culture and religion, financial constraints and immigration-related concerns impacted the ability of victim-survivors to get help.

Borgia said: “Thank you to Jackie Agudelo for the moving and informative discussion about how to support victims of domestic and intimate partner violence in the Hispanic and Latino communities. Jackie’s approach to treating everyone with love, empathy and understanding is both very effective and at the core of what makes the United Community Center an invaluable resource.”

Agudelo said: “It was very gratifying to join the Office for Women to be able to share what makes the experience of Hispanic victim-survivors of domestic violence unique. What we encounter every day at the center is probably not known or understood by most people. I hope that the information we discussed will encourage more of those who suffer to come and seek help and a safe space.”
