FIND OUT FRIDAY: HALLOWEEN EDITION!
If you’re driving around Yonkers skirting the law, somebody’s surely watching you. Spoiler alert: it’s us.
At the direction of Mayor Spano and Police Commissioner Sapienza, over 30 Detectives, Investigators, Officers, and Supervisors hit the streets this week for a little fall cleanup with fresh sets of StarChase Vehicle Trackers and StopStick Tire Deflation Devices- in case a ghost tried to run.
Our primary targets? Ghost plates – license plates intentionally obscured, altered, or covered to evade identification, along with fraudulent temporary registrations.
But our ghost hunt got SPOOKY… and OPERATION GHOST TRAP became a citywide quality-of-life and vehicle enforcement detail stretching to every corner of Yonkers.
We ended up looking for:
Ghost plates
Unregistered and uninsured cars, motorcycles, and mopeds
Reckless drivers
Illegal vehicle modifications
Speeding & plenty of other vehicle violations
Here’s the thing: You pay to register and insure your vehicle. So does everyone else who follows the law. Those who decide to skip those responsibilities don’t get a free pass – especially when uninsured drivers can leave innocent motorists facing serious financial consequences.
THE RESULTS:
Over 20 vehicles impounded
Nearly 70 summonses issued
One arrest, courtesy of Mr. Sanchez Mercado, who apparently wanted a starring role in Find Out Friday.
When Detectives attempted to stop Emil Sanchez Mercado (28, Yonkers), he fled, leading them on a pursuit right to his front door – with his 11-month-old child in the car. He then left the baby behind and ran into his apartment.
Unfortunately for him, Detectives and members of our Emergency Service Unit weren’t having that. They took him into custody and charged him with Reckless Driving, Unlawful Fleeing of a Police Officer, Endangering the Welfare of a Child, and Aggravated Unlicensed Operation.
These are the same quality-of-life issues residents consistently bring to our attention. We hear you, and we’re taking action.
If you’re driving on the streets of Yonkers, come correct – or be prepared to walk home.
