In celebration of National Voter Registration Day, New York State Senate Majority Leader Andrea Stewart-Cousins held a voter registration drive in Yonkers, where community members took the important step of registering to vote. Senator Stewart-Cousins was joined at the drive by the Yonkers Downtown BID, Yonkers City Council President Lakisha Collins-Bellamy, and Council Member Deana Norman.
“Registering to vote is the first step toward making sure your voice is heard, and today we made that step a little easier for people right here in Yonkers. The State Legislature has worked to expand access to voting, from early voting to pre-registration for 16- and 17-year-olds, and days like this are how we put those tools directly in New Yorker’s hands,” said Senator Stewart-Cousins. “I’m thrilled that many residents came out on National Voter Registration Day to take that first step toward having their voices heard in November.”
New Yorkers who still need to register can do so online, by mail, or in person by October 24. Once registered, voters can cast their ballot by absentee, during early voting from October 24 through November 1, or in person on Election Day, November 3.
To register, New Yorkers must be U.S. citizens, at least 18 years old, and residents of their state and county, city, or village for at least 30 days before the election. They cannot claim the right to vote elsewhere or be incarcerated for a felony conviction. Sixteen and seventeen-year-olds may also pre-register to vote, under legislation Senator Stewart-Cousins advanced as part of the state’s 2019 voting reform package.
