Several months ago, the Yonkers Lions Club was the recipient of more than 50,000 magnified reading glasses from a generous benefactor – which have successful been distributed to those in need.

The Yonkers Lions Club is one of more than 40,000 clubs that comprise Lions International, a global service organization with more than 1.4 million members in more than 200 countries. The primary message of “Lionism” is “Fighting blindness and helping the blind.”

Within two months, the Yonkers Lions have been able to distribute the entire gift through its network of Lions Clubs to be used in humanitarian missions to the Philippines, Dominican Republic and India, as well as donating glasses here in the U.S. to schools, health fairs, nursing homes, churches and other worthy institutions.

Also, the Yonkers Lions Club will be donating glasses locally to the public at the Riverfest on Sept. 14 and the McLean Avenue Merchants Fair on Sept. 21.

The Yonkers Lions Club welcomes contributions to assist in covering the cost of shipping and mailing of the glasses. For information, contact Treasurer Howard Berman at 914-423-8880 or via email at heberman1@aol.com.
