YPIE Opens College Zone In Downtown Yonkers

YPIE Officials and staff join with State Senator Shelley Mayer, Councilwomen Corazon Pineda-Isaac and Shanae Williams, Council Majority Leader Michael Sabatino, and Councilman John Rubbo for the opening of the new College Zone

Yonkers Partners in Education officially opened its new YPIE College Zone, a state-of-the art after-school learning space that brings together hundreds of Yonkers public high school students each week to learn, be inspired, and be part of a community on the path to college success.

Mayor Mike Spano, Yonkers Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Edwin Quezada, and State Sen. Shelley Mayer joined the ribbon-cutting event May 9, along with representatives from the Office of State Sen. and Democratic Majority Leader Andrea Stewart-Cousins, Impact100 Westchester, and MGM Resorts International.

Twelfth-grade student Citlalli Rojas shared her experience being part of YPIE during high school and her plans to attend Trinity College in the fall. She joined many other YPIE students to give tours of the new space and present examples of the college readiness work that happens at the YPIE College Zone.

The YPIE College Zone provides a rigorous extended learning day for ninth- through 12th-grade students who participate in the YPIE Scholars Program, with an emphasis on social, emotional and academic skill sets, and support from YPIE staff and volunteer mentors from around Westchester.

As Yonkers Rising continues to highlight the hard work and academic achievement of this year’s valedictorians and salutatorians, many of these young Yonkers men and women have thanked YPIE for helping them get into the college of their choice and better prepare them for their futures.
