Yorktown High School students will have a smooth start to the academic year after a major facelift for a commuter parking lot next to the campus.
Resurfacing work at the Downing Park commuter parking lot began on Monday with crew laying new asphalt. The approximately $250,000 rehabilitation is expected to be completed by the end of the week, and the lot will be fully striped by the first day of school.
For years, students have navigated cracked and uneven surfaces, and many brought their concerns directly to the Town Board.
“This was really the kids, not only advocating, but petitioning their local government to get something done,” said Supervisor Ed Lachterman. “We listen to all the voices out there.”
The work at the commuter lot is the latest public amenity improvement.
“Over the last couple of years, we’ve really been focusing on our parks’ infrastructure,” said parks Superintendent James Martorano, Jr. “A lot of these projects are not fancy, but they are making sure that our parks will last for many years to come.”
“It’s a great lesson in government. The kids spoke up,” said Deputy Supervisor Sergio Esposito. “We are committed to Yorktown.”
