A heated confrontation between some Yonkers residents and some members of the Yonkers Police Department on Sunday evening, August 30, 2026, is drawing widespread attention. This all unfolded after a video of the encounter began popping up online, garnering thousands of views.
The Yonkers Sanctuary Movement described the encounter in a Facebook statement as a “frustrating, cruel, and dangerous experience,” alleging that officers behaved aggressively and abusively.
According to The Movement, officers allegedly pushed individuals toward a staircase, attempted to take a cellphone and pushed against a door while a daughter of one of those involved was present. The group said a father eventually arrived and helped to sort of resolve the situation.
Those allegations have not been independently verified, and the video circulating online does not necessarily capture everything that occurred before, during or after the confrontation. I want to make that clear.
Still, for those who have watched the footage, the video appears to show an increasingly tense exchange. That much is for sure. There were officers who appear visibly aggravated as the confrontation unfolds. That much is for sure too. A Yonkers police Captain seen during the encounter has also become the target of mounting criticism on social media. Particularly on Instagram. Some commenters are calling him by an apparent nickname and not by his government name.
The Sanctuary Movement similarly criticized the captain’s response, alleging that he refused to acknowledge the officers’ conduct as abusive.
The Sanctuary Movement said it plans to meet with the Police Department and is calling for the Yonkers police commissioner to meet with community members over broader concerns involving policing, immigration and interactions between law enforcement and residents.
The organization is also encouraging residents who believe they have experienced similar encounters to join them on September 16, 2026, to voice their concerns.
Mind you, video of Sunday’s confrontation remains online for the public to watch and draw its own conclusions. The video is constantly being shared. And as the footage continues to spread across social media and garner tens of thousands of views, scrutiny is growing over what happened and what preceded the confrontation.

Note: The Yonkers Police Department issued the following statement: The Yonkers Police Department is aware of videos circulating on social media depicting an interaction between Yonkers Police Officers and members of the community at the YPD Hudson Street Annex. The videos capture portions of the encounter but do not depict the circumstances that initially prompted the interaction or the incident in its entirety.
For reference, the Hudson Street Annex of the Yonkers Police Department is not a police facility that is ordinarily open to the public, nor is it a location where members of the public would typically enter to make reports, file complaints, or request police services. The facility primarily serves as an operational reporting location for Officers assigned to the Department’s Bicycle Unit and Getty Square foot posts.
On Sunday, August 30, 2026, at approximately 10:00 p.m., an Officer assigned to the Hudson Street Annex returned to the facility to complete administrative duties. After using his Department-issued identification card to access the building, the Officer observed an unidentified male enter immediately behind him without independently accessing the building.
Given the late hour, the non-public nature of the police facility located within the building, and the Officer’s understanding at the time regarding other occupants and authorized after-hours use of the property, the Officer asked the male to identify himself and explain his purpose for entering the building. The male declined to provide identification and stated that he “lived in the building.” The Officer also observed that the male appeared unsteady on his feet and potentially intoxicated. Based on the totality of those circumstances, the Officer continued attempting to determine whether the male was authorized to be inside the building.
The male was ultimately identified as being affiliated with a tenant that utilizes space on another floor of the building. That information, however, was not known to the Officer when the encounter began, and the male did not identify himself as being affiliated with any when initially questioned. Instead, he stated that he lived in the building, which was inconsistent with the Officer’s understanding that the property had no residential tenants.
The interaction subsequently expanded to include additional civilians and Officers and became contentious. No arrests were made, and no force was used. The Yonkers Police Department is conducting an internal review of the incident, including the actions of all Officers involved, to determine whether Department policies and procedures were followed throughout the encounter.
While the initial inquiry was preliminarily determined to be warranted under the circumstances, the Department’s review will examine how the interaction proceeded from that point forward, and we will not prejudge those findings.
The Department is also reviewing the circumstances surrounding the shared use of the building. The Department had not received official notification that individuals affiliated with other tenants would access or utilize the building during late-night or other non-business hours. The Yonkers Police Department is working with building representatives to address communications and property access issues moving forward.
