Yonkers Police to Participate in National Police Week 2026

The Yonkers Police Department will take part in National Police Week 2026, with events from May 11th through May 17th.

President John F. Kennedy proclaimed May 15th as National Peace Officers Memorial Day and the calendar week in which May 15th falls as National Police Week. Established by a joint resolution of Congress in 1962, National Police Week pays special recognition to those law enforcement officers who have lost their lives in the line of duty for the safety and protection of others. It has now grown into a collaborative effort of many different law enforcement organizations to honor America’s law enforcement community across the country.

All four Precincts will be hosting open houses during the week; community members are encouraged to stop by and meet their local Officers. Our Community Affairs Division will be in a different precinct every day with free handouts for the kids, information, and sign-up sheets for many of our outreach programs and services, and just to say hello and chat – our new Mobile Command Center will be there too, come check it out!

On Monday, May 11thMayor Mike Spano and Police Commissioner Chris Sapienza will kick the week off with a National Police opening celebration at the Unity Fountain in front of City Hall, at 1:30 PM.

On Tuesday, May 12th, we will hold our Yonkers Police Awards Ceremony and Memorial Service at Castle Royale on Waverly Street, beginning promptly at 6:00 PM. During the ceremony, Officers will be awarded Department Honors for their work above and beyond the call of duty. Immediately following this awards ceremony, we will hold a memorial service honoring all YPD members who lost their lives in the line of duty.

On Friday, May 15th, we will be holding Open Houses of both our Community Kids Closet at the Yonkers PAL and the George Rutledge Yonkers Police Museum at YPD Headquarters.

Please see the attached program for National Police Week 2026, which includes all our scheduled events.

Thank you for supporting the Yonkers Police Department and Law Enforcement everywhere!
