Mayor Mike Spano, with family, on electon night after his victory
By Dan Murphy
Yonkers Mayor Mike Spano made history on Election night Nov. 7 when he became the first Yonkers Mayor to have been elected to 4, four-year terms. Spano defeated republican Anthony Merante, by a 61%-36% margin. The Mayor touted his accomplishments and vowed to continue the progress, urging other governments to be “more like Yonkers.” “So Westchester, your going to be like Yonkers. New York State your going to be like Yonkers, America should be like Yonkers. That’s what we want.”
On electon night, Merante issued the following statement. “I called Mayor Mike Spano this morning to congratulate him on his re-election. I look forward to working together with him and my colleagues on the City Council for the betterment of our City. I’d like to thank all my enthusiastic supporters who worked so tirelessly on this campaign to advance our core message of Restoring Term Limits.
“These hard-working volunteers went door to door and collected thousands of signatures to get the ballot line and to push for a ballot referendum in 2024. Like them, I’m disappointed that we fell short, but the voters in this election have now spoken that Term Limits are not relevant for the City of Yonkers, and we must accept their decision.
“I believe in the people of Yonkers, and I will continue to work on their behalf to build a brighter future for all our families,” said Merante.
Just over 26,000 Yonkers residents cast their votes. Allison Abramson also ran for Mayor on the Working Families Party line and got 3% of the vote.
