The Yonkers Historical Society honored four deserving residents for their commitment to the rich history of Yonkers at the annual YHS dinner Oct. 3 at the Fairway’s Dunwoodie.

The key to history was given to Mary Calvi, first lady of Yonkers, CBS NY news anchor and author of “Dear George, Dear Mary, A Novel of George Washington’s First Love,” which recounts the love affair between a young George Washington and Mary Philipse. The book captivated historians from Yonkers and beyond, with Mary Philipse living in Philipse Manor Hall, which still stands today in downtown Yonkers – more than 250 years after the romance.

Retired “Captain” Bob Walters received the YHS Community Service Award for his years of service on the Yonkers Science Barge, and everything else he does for the city, behind the scenes.

YHS Volunteers of the Year Awards went to Richard Mangini and Loren Chaidez.
