Yonkers Boys Swimming Team Having a Great Season

By Phil Foley

YONKERS — I recently was in touch with the Coach of the Yonkers High School Boys Swimming Team  a nice lady named Julie. Schoenlank  She told me that the team is off to a 4-0 start.  They have won their first four meets!  Here are the opponents and the scores:

Yonkers 81, Nyack 71

Yonkers 92, Poughkeepsie 67

Yonkers 91 Peekskill 69

Yonkers 88, Ossining 77

The boys have broken pool records at every meet so far.  The latest was 3 records broken vs Ossining.  Captain Kevin Kantar broke a 36 year old record in the 100 Breaststroke by nearly 2 seconds.  His time was 1:08.78.

His brother David Kantar broke a record in the 100 Butterfly ,  which was set back in 2004!  His time was 56.13.

A record in the 200 yard Free Relay was also set.  The time was 1:38.10.  The team consisted of Kevin, David, Michael Kantar of Yonkers HS and Ivan Romero of Lincoln HS.

On 12/18 Vs Peekskill Michael Kantar broke a record from 1999 in the 200 IM with a time of 2:10.22. The 3 Kantars and Romero broke their own record  in the 200 Medley Relay with a time of 1:50.78.

The team also had strong performances from Captain Juan Ruiz (YMA), Sr. Joel Mendoza (Saunders HS), SO Melvin Romero (Yonkers HS} and Fernando Lopez (Yonkers HS).

The team is looking to continue their success this January as the second half of the season begins! Good luck to the entire team!
