The Yonkers Boys Swim Team won back-to-back League Championships at the Mark Twain Pool in Yonkers on Saturday, January 27, 2024. This is the team’s third league championship in the past six years. Yonkers tied Rye High School for the title, with each team scoring 355 points. The team’s only loss this season was to Rye by 6 points in a dual meet. Yonkers overall record was an impressive 7-1.
This year’s varsity squad was composed of 26 boys from six high schools: Roosevelt, Lincoln, Gorton, Saunders, YMA, and Yonkers High School. The captains for the season were seniors from Yonkers High; Liam McMullen and Kenan Suwan.
On February 14th, Yonkers competed at Felix Festa Pool in Clarkstown for Section 1 Championships. The team placed 24th overall. Jr Miguel Gaviria was the only member to score individual points for the team, and placed 16th in both the 200 yard I.M. (2:11.22) and 100 yard breaststroke (1:07.64). Yonkers Medley Relay finished 15th with a time of 1:54.44.
Other qualifiers for the championship were Justin Soriano (50 and 100 yard free) and Alex Lowe (200 I.M. and 100 breaststroke).
Captain McMullen competed in his final varsity competition and reflected on the season and his career for Yonkers; “This season has been the most fun by far, and I have never had a better team in any other sport. Every swimmer on the team felt like family. Competing was very exciting, and we were able to win yet another championship for Yonkers! I’m so grateful for this experience with Yonkers Swimming.”
