Westchester County Exec. Latimer Caps Gas Tax, Orders Free Bus Service this Summer

By Dan Murphy

Westchester County Executive George Latimer, in an attempt to help residents struggling with rising inflation, has sumbitted to the Board of Legislators a plan to cap the tax on gasoline at 12 cents per gallon from June-1-November 30, 2022.

The current gas tax in Westchester is based on the county sales tax currently at 4%. So, if the gas at your local station is $4.00 per gallon, a 4% county tax would be 16 cents per gallon. Under Latimer’s plan, the tax would be cut from 16 cents to 12 cents per gallon, a savings of 4 cents per gallon.

When combined with a New York State plan to cut the gas tax by 16 cents also starting in June, and Westchester residents will see significant relief at the pumps this summer, when gas prices usually go up.

Latimer also took action to help county residents that don’t have a car or fill up their tank every week by instituting a bus fare holiday from June 1-September 6, for all Bee-Line buses. “This will ensure that we provide relief to all our residents during these inflationary times,” writes Latimer, in his letter to the BOL.
