Armonk Fire Department and Purchase pre-school children honor Broadview resident John F. Heimerdinger

A longtime Armonk Fire Department member and prominent civic leader was honored today on his 94th birthday with a celebration that included a fire truck and cheering children from the Purchase College pre-school.

John F. Heimerdinger was surprised when a firetruck rolled into the parking lot at Broadview at Purchase College, the senior living community on the campus of Purchase College, where he now lives. Three, four and five-year-olds from the college’s pre-school, the Broadview staff and fellow residents joined in to sing happy birthday. The children took turns climbing aboard the fire truck.

A former Armonk fire district commissioner and chief, Heimerdinger served as a firefighter and EMT with the volunteer department for more than 50 years. He was instrumental in the construction of its firehouse, as well as supporting numerous other local causes.

“The firehouse would never have been built without him,’’ said Armonk Fire District Board Chairman Bill Fisher, who along with the board’s secretary Joe McConnell, brought the truck to Broadview. “He made it happen.’’

In addition to serving on the Armonk Fire District Board, Heimerdinger served on the board of Westchester Medical Center, which immortalized him with the John F.Heimerdinger Lifetime of Service Award.  He was also president of the Jewish Guild for the Blind.
