Westchester Cheers on Aerin Frankel as Women Win Gold in Hockey

The U.S. Women’s Ice Hockey Team captured Olympic gold at the 2026 Milan Cortina Winter Games, defeating longtime rival Canada 2-1 in a thrilling overtime final on February 19, 2026. This victory marked Team USA’s third all-time Olympic gold medal in women’s hockey (following 1998 and 2018) and their first since the shootout win in PyeongChang.

The Americans dominated the tournament with a perfect 7-0 record, outscoring opponents 33-2 overall in a display of depth, resilience, and elite talent. The gold-medal game was tense: Canada took a 1-0 lead into the third period, pressuring the U.S. defense throughout. Captain Hilary Knight, a legendary figure, tied the game with a clutch goal just 2:04 remaining in regulation—setting U.S. Olympic records with her 15th career goal and 33rd point—force overtime and ignite the comeback.

In the extra frame, defenseman Megan Keller sealed the win at 4:07 with a skillful backhander past the Canadian goalie, sending the team into celebration. The squad linked arms to sing the national anthem, embodying unity and pride.

A standout was goaltender Aerin Frankel (from Chappaqua), who anchored the blue line with composure and brilliance. Frankel made 30 saves in the final, including key denials early on, and posted stellar tournament stats: a near-perfect save percentage in prior games, including a historic shutout against Canada in the preliminaries (the first by a U.S. goalie at the Olympics). Her poise after allowing the lone goal—regaining focus and never wavering—earned praise as instrumental to the gold. Frankel called the triumph a “dream come true,” reflecting on her journey alongside teammates.

This gold cements Team USA’s resurgence and bright future in women’s hockey.
