The Village of Port Chester has taken a historic step in honoring the service and sacrifice of America’s veterans by becoming the first municipality in Westchester County to adopt the optional 100% real property tax exemption for qualifying seriously disabled veterans, as authorized under New York State Real Property Tax Law.
The Board of Trustees unanimously approved the local law following a public hearing, reaffirming the Village’s longstanding commitment to supporting those who have served our nation. The new legislation expands upon Port Chester’s existing Alternative Veterans Exemption by providing the fullest level of property tax relief permitted under New York State law for veterans who have sustained permanent and
total service-connected disabilities.
The local law also continues the Village’s existing Alternative Veterans Exemption program, maintaining the maximum exemption levels authorized by New York State for qualifying wartime, combat, and disabled veterans. Together, these exemptions provide meaningful financial assistance to those who have served while recognizing the extraordinary sacrifices made by military families.
Port Chester remains committed to recognizing the service of veterans through policies that strengthen the community and ensure those who have borne the greatest burdens of military service receive the support they have earned.
“These veterans continue to live with the permanent consequences of their military service. Adoption of this exemption is a meaningful way for their communities to recognize that sacrifice and help qualifying veterans remain secure in their homes. I respectfully ask the media to help bring attention to this opportunity and encourage local governments and school boards across New York State to consider adoption,” said Chester B. Edwards II, Chair, Westchester Veterans Alliance, Inc.
