On Aug. 24, members of the Ukrainian community in Yonkers gathered at City Hall with Mayor Mike Spano and Councilman John Rubbo to raise the Ukrainian flag above City Hall in celebration of the 35th year of Ukrainian independence.
Mayor Spano said “We raised the Ukrainian flag at Yonkers City Hall in recognition of Ukraine’s Independence Day. As Ukraine continues to endure war, we stand with the Ukrainian people and pray for peace, safety and strength for families who remain vulnerable,” said Mayor Spano.
Council Majority Leader John Rubbo said, “ Yesterday, we proudly raised the Ukrainian flag at Yonkers City Hall to mark 35 years of Ukraine’s independence as a sovereign nation. Now more than ever, it is important that we stand in solidarity with the Ukrainian people and reaffirm our support for their freedom, sovereignty, and right to determine their own future. Yonkers stands with Ukraine!”
August 24 marks the date of the adoption of the Act of Declaration of Independence in 1991, freeing the country from the Soviet Union.
