I can still remember the date 10 years ago, when Yonkers received a boat called the Science Barge. Then-City Council President Chuck Lesncik was instrumental in bringing the barge to Yonkers, but at the time of its arrival, very few people knew what it was and what it was about.

With each passing year, the Science Barge has become part of the downtown of Yonkers and an eco-wonder for visitors to see – from Dan Rather to visitors to New York City from around the world who take the trip up to check it out.

The Science Barge showed us early on how rooftops and just about any location can become a garden, and how you can grow plants and crops and vegetables with sustainable energy, wind, solar and hydroponics.

Groundworks Hudson Valley has done a wonderful job in expanding the programs and opportunities for anyone, from students to seniors to visit, learn and enjoy. And to the caretaker of the Science Barge, Captain Bob Walters, congratulations on 10 years, and the hopes for another 10.

Captain Bob is a wonderful, welcoming presence and greeter for visitors to the Science Barge. Together with the daylighting of the Saw Mill River at Van der Donck Park, the Science Barge has become a destination for young millennials and those who support living green.

Congratulations to not only Captain Bob and Groundwork Hudson Valley, but to the many volunteers who have made the lesson and the attraction continue!
