Stepinac Teacher AnnMarie Galdau Collaborates with Khan Academy to Develop AI-Powered Writing Coach

Archbishop Stepinac High School proudly announces that AnnMarie Galdau, one of its esteemed English teachers, has partnered with Khan Academy to contribute to the development of their innovative AI tool, Khanmingo Writing Coach. This groundbreaking platform utilizes artificial intelligence to transform essay writing into a dynamic and interactive experience, offering step-by-step guidance for students and actionable insights for teachers.

When initially approached by Khan Academy to assist with the project, Galdau candidly admitted she was skeptical about AI, expressing concerns that it “gives the kids all the answers.” However, Khan Academy saw her perspective as precisely what the project needed, encouraging her to provide critical feedback that would help align the tool with the real-world needs of educators.

Galdau worked closely with Khanmingo’s research team to offer insights into the types of feedback English teachers typically provide to students. During live sessions, she reviewed the AI’s comment generation process and shared suggestions to refine the platform’s language and functionality. Her expertise played a key role in ensuring that Khanmingo Writing Coach delivers constructive and relevant comments that foster student learning.

As part of her collaboration, Galdau earned the Khan Academy AI Certification, a distinguished achievement that qualifies her to train fellow education professionals on integrating Khanmingo’s resources into their classrooms. This certification recognizes Galdau as an expert in using AI-powered tools to enhance student writing and teacher efficiency.

“AnnMarie’s involvement with Khan Academy is a testament to her dedication to innovative teaching methods and her commitment to student success,” said Frank Portanova ’93, Vice Principal for Academics. “We are incredibly proud to have her expertise recognized on such a prestigious platform.”

Through her collaboration with Khan Academy, Galdau not only helped shape an essential educational tool but also elevated Stepinac’s presence in the evolving landscape of technology-driven learning.
