New York State Senator Shelley Mayer joined the Scarsdale Police Department to unveil its new police motorcycles and trailer, made possible by a $100,000 state grant she secured for the Scarsdale Police Department’s Motorcycle Unit.
The Scarsdale Police Department Motorcycle Unit serves as a resource that allows officers to travel in tight spaces where police cars can’t go. The Unit’s responsibilities include traffic control and enforcement, monitoring seatbelt use and distracted driving, promoting pedestrian crosswalk safety, and enforcing speed limits with radar equipment equipped on the motorcycles. The motorcycles are also often used during funeral escorts, parades, street fairs, and at other community outreach events.
State Senator Shelley Mayer said, “I am pleased to have secured $100,000 in state funding to assist the Scarsdale Police Department in purchasing two new motorcycles and a motorcycle trailer. It is crucial that our local police departments and officers have the necessary resources to respond to emergencies and keep our community safe. Thank you to Scarsdale Police Chief Steven DelBene, Officer Nick Kringas, and the dedicated members of the Scarsdale Police Department for your commitment to our community.”
Scarsdale Police Chief Steven DelBene said, “I want to thank Senator Mayer for her help in securing funding for our new motorcycles. These funds allowed us to fully outfit two brand new Harley-Davidson motorcycles, which are much safer for our officers to ride than our older models. These motorcycles will help us improve highway safety through education and enforcement throughout the Village of Scarsdale. They will also be used for escorts of dignitaries and for funeral processions.”
The funding was awarded through the New York State Senate’s Community Resiliency, Economic Sustainability, and Technology (CREST) Program. CREST grants are awarded to municipalities through application and administered by the Dormitory Authority of the State of New York (DASNY), to be used for improvement and infrastructure projects.
