This too is Yonkers—by Eric W. Schoen

I’m in Stamford, Connecticut last Saturday at Marshall’s. They have my protein bars at an excellent price. I buy a box. I pay for the Box, the cashier hands it to me with a receipt. Can I have a plastic bag I ask? Sorry sir, Stamford has an ordinance against plastic bags. You will have to take it like this. Want a paper bag? 10 cents!

I go to Target in Stamford and use the self checkout aisle. The first question the self checkout machine asks me is how many bags did I bring with me. What! Then it asks me how many Target paper shopping bags I would like to buy. Are you kidding me? How many people are just taking the bags readily available at the self checkout and not paying for them? If I was a merchant I would be concerned about theft having people bring so many bags into the grocery store!

It’s press time, May 15. The temperature is 48 degrees. I’m freezing. We are all freezing. But the sun is out, not tomorrow but today. The weather channel says warmer weather is upon us, everyday, in the high 60’s. With a chance of rain everyday. Will we ever get a string of weather in the 70’s without rain like it’s supposed to be May 15? What happened to April Showers bring May flowers?

City of Yonkers holds a Budget hearing on the city budget, Board of Education included at Saunders High School. Superintendent of Schools is threatening layoffs. He is down $17 million dollars. There are only a dozen people who attend the hearing. Are folks so jaded that they don’t believe there will be cuts and that the full budget will be funded? Do they care? Are they tired of the charades the city goes through every year? How many times can you cry wolf?

The Journal News makes a big announcement of the nominations for awards for High School Musicals this year. Not one nomination from the Yonkers Public Schools. Almost every high school in Westchester nominates a production for consideration. Yonkers Public Schools hasn’t had a musical production in many years. What fun I had playing Officer Krupke at Yonkers High School in 1978!

50th Anniversary of Woodstock coming up this summer. Bands, location, everything is all set. Than all of a sudden one of the financiers pulls out. Will there be a Woodstock celebration this year? Will Route 17 be clogged for miles with participants leaving their cars and walking to the festival site?

The number of babies born in the U.S. in 2018 fell to the lowest level in 32 years, according to a government report. The numbers are part of a decades long trend toward fewer and fewer babies being born each year — which means we’re getting further away from the possibility of having enough children to replace ourselves, according to the report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Texas and Boston are voted America’s sexiest accents, while Long Island and New Jersey come in dead last! I love my New York accent. So do people around the world when I travel!

Getting ready for your summer travel? Do you feel safe with all that’s coming out about the Federal Aviation Administration and Boeing. Will we fit into smaller and smaller seats? How much more will we have to pay for baggage we bring on board or the gifts we bring home?

A Mother’s newborn taken away from her after testing positive for drugs after eating a poppyseed bagel. Yes, we’ve all heard that those poppy seed bagels, my favorite can cause false positives on drug tests. Thank god mother and child are safe resting at home!

Former Congressman Anthony Weiner is released from prison and the halfway house he was living in after serving time for his bad behavior, sexting an underage child. Did he really say he ‘Hopes to lead a life of integrity and service?’

Study says Whole Foods prices on average are 39% higher than Walmart. As if we didn’t know that. And we can’t even get a Target or a Walmart in Yonkers, the 4th or 3rd largest city (depending on who you talk to) in New York State!

Well, some things are funny. Some things are sad. Let’s cue up our beloved Doris Day who passed away this week at the age of 97! (And don’t forget funny man Tim Conway, gone at age 85!)
