In honor of Monday’s Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service, Yonkers City Council President Mike Khader and Councilwoman Shanae Williams helped distribute more than 500 cold-weather items to those in need throughout Yonkers during their first annual Warm up for Winter Clothing Drive.
Thanks to the generosity of Nature’s Market, Super Stop & Shop Yonkers, PCNY, Catholic Widows of Westchester, Bombas, Yonkers Paddling and Rowing Club, and various community members, dozens of Yonkers residents went home with items such as gloves, hats, socks, coats and toiletries to help them stay warm as the temperatures continue to drop.
“It was an honor to be able to do my small part in helping the needy on the Day of Service,” said Khader. “Dr. King believed we could make the world a better place simply by lending a hand to our neighbor, regardless of race, religion or class. On Monday, we did just that and I could not be more proud of everyone involved in making this such a successful event. I look forward to making this a tradition in the years to come.”
“It was an honor to partner with Council President Khader and all participating groups to give back to those in need in honor of the late Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.,” added Williams. “As Dr. King said: ‘Everybody can be great, because anybody can serve. You don’t have to have a college degree to serve. You don’t have to make your subject and verb agree to serve. You only need a heart full of grace. A soul generated by love.’
“Special thanks to everyone who contributed to the warm winter clothing drive and those who volunteered their time to help make the event a success.”
