Yonkers Partners in Education Named NYS Friend of Education

Yonkers Partners in Education (YPIE) has been selected as the recipient of the 2025 Friend of Education Award by the School Administrators Association of New York State (SAANYS). This award is given to an individual, group, or organization that has consistently contributed to the support and advancement of outstanding public education and the students of New York State.

Founded in 2007, YPIE partners with students to ensure they are ready for, enroll in, and complete college. Addressing the challenges of a historically under-resourced school district, YPIE provides families with equitable access to the critical tools and services necessary for college success. Originally focused on college access, YPIE has expanded to provide a comprehensive support system, including college readiness and persistence programs, guiding students from ninth grade through college and into careers.

YPIE’s impact is evident in its impressive student outcomes. In 2023, 90% of YPIE graduates enrolled in college, with 81% attending four-year institutions. Moreover, 90% of 2022 graduates who initially enrolled returned for their second year, demonstrating the effectiveness of YPIE’s long-term support. Through the YPIE Scholars program, students receive individualized coaching, academic support, and career exploration opportunities, ensuring they are prepared for the demands of higher education.

A hallmark of YPIE’s success is its commitment to data-driven impact. In partnership with the Yonkers Public School District, YPIE utilizes student data to implement timely interventions and track long-term success. Research shows that YPIE students are 15.4% more likely to graduate from college than their peers – a significant achievement in the landscape of higher education.

Despite the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic, YPIE adapted and expanded its programs, increasing its reach within Yonkers Public Schools and introducing its model to new communities. In fall 2023, YPIE launched YPIE Jersey City and is bringing its science research/college success program to Nashville in spring 2025.

“We are honored to be recognized by SAANYS for our commitment to educational equity and student success,” said Sam Wallis, YPIE Executive Director. “Every student deserves the opportunity to succeed in college and beyond. By setting high expectations and providing the right support, we can ensure more students achieve their goals and build meaningful careers.”

Yonkers Partners in Education and fellow 2025 award winners will be recognized at SAANYS’ annual awards celebration, taking place on May 2 at the Desmond Hotel-Crown Plaza Albany.

SAANYS represents nearly 22,000 school administrators, supervisors, and retiree leaders. As a professional association, SAANYS is committed to providing direction, service, and support to the membership in their efforts to improve the quality of education and leadership in New York State schools.

SAANYS is affiliated with the National Association of Elementary School Principals (NAESP) and the National Association of Secondary School Principals (NASSP).
