While most of us are bundled up in our homes here in Westchester this winter watching TV, Jim Killoran is “fighting the fight” to get sweatshirts, hats, gloves, and socks to the homeless population in Westchester.
“I see people who are struggling and trying to stay warm. It’s an honor for me to know a homeless person. They are as good as the President to me, even better,” said Killoran, the CEO of the Fuller Center for Housing in greater NYC, who has spent most of his life serving others, building housing for those who can’t afford to buy a home in Westchester, or helping seniors trying to stay in their homes in Westchester, or helping hurricane victims across our area.
As the unofficial Angel of Westchester, Killoran travels around his home base of New Rochelle looking for someone to help and to serve. Often, it is the police who call him to alert him to someone who is without the essentials to survive another winter storm.
“No one should be homeless, but the reality is that those who are could use a little help, with a sweatshirt, hat, socks, or a coat, or a cup of soup, anything can help save a life,” said Killoran.
On one of his many Facebook videos, Killoran posted, “ Hey. Good morning. Blessings on this cold day. I just picked up a bunch of masks, sweatshirts, ninja masks, coats, and different things that can go to people on the street. So it’s cold out. But you know what? We’re blessed. And if you see this, you have a phone. You’re alive.
“And so I know where a lot of the homeless are, so stay tuned. Say a prayer. I can get all this stuff out. I got a van full of stuff to bring out to the people on this. So if you need help, if I can be of help, and I promise nothing. (914) 406-3357, we always appreciate donations. So if you want to buy a pack of hats like the one I’m wearing or any jackets, drop them off at our headquarters at 21 Huguenot Street.
“You know, God blesses us so much with people like you who watch us, who join us, and, uh. So stay warm, be safe. We’ll get through this together. And God has blessed us to be alive another day with gratitude and with you. So thank you. God bless you.”
Another great part of the work that Killoran does through the Fuller Center for Housing of Greater NY is that he connects with young adults in Westchester and gets them “off their computers and outdoors building houses.”
Recently, members of the Eastchester High School Fuller Club dropped off coats and sweatshirts to help us assist those in need.
“Our clubs help us help so many…today they helped me help the homeless.”
