Harrison Vietnam Veteran Takes Part in Hudson Valley Honor Flight

Harrison resident and Vietnam veteran John Brown recently participated in the Hudson Valley Honor Flight, accompanied by Laura Short from the Harrison Community Services and Veteran Affairs Department, who served as his guardian for the day.

Mr. Brown joined 62 fellow veterans from across Westchester County on a flight to Washington, D.C., where they spent the day visiting some of the nation’s most significant military memorials and monuments. Stops included the National World War II Memorial, Marine Corps War Memorial (Iwo Jima Memorial), Vietnam Veterans Memorial, Lincoln Memorial, Korean War Veterans Memorial, and Arlington National Cemetery.

The trip provided an opportunity for Mr. Brown to reflect on his military service, share stories with fellow veterans, and honor the sacrifices of those who served before and alongside him.

A particularly meaningful part of the experience was the flight itself. It was Mr. Brown’s first time on an airplane since 1963, when he enlisted in the U.S. Navy and flew to boot camp in Chicago. Following boot camp, he was stationed aboard the USS Warrington (DD-843), where he served for four years as a Machinist’s Mate Third Class (MM3).

Reflecting on the experience, Mr. Brown said it was “a day I will never forget.”
