The Exchange Club of Yonkers held its Book of Golden Deeds Gala on April 26, during National Child Abuse Prevention month in America. Exchange is a national service club and its national project is Child Abuse Prevention. Shaken Baby Syndrome and Fetal Alcohol Prevention are part of the national program
The Book of Golden Deeds award is given to those who are true humanitarians and who, along life’s journey, have helped others without seeking anything in return. President Ann Muro was quoted as saying “a true humanitarian will help others without asking ‘What’s in it for me…’”
This year’s honorees were Anthony Merante and Majid Haddad. Muro said both have exemplified all that helping others is about. Merante is a certified public accountant and a Yonkers city councilman, and Majid is a retired Yonkers businessman and community activist. Both have helped so many over the years and, in many instances, won’t even talk about what they have done or who they have reached out to help.
The gala was held at Westchester Manor and family, friends and political leaders were also in attendance. Exchange is not a political organization, although many who hold elective office have chosen to become part of the “Exchange family” and its social and community agenda.
Assemblyman Nader Sayegh, an Exchange member, introduced Haddad and spoke of his years of helping others. It was Exchange member Justin Tubiolo who did the same for Merante.
Another highlight of the evening was the anniversary celebration honoring Majed Samarneh and Mayor Mike Spano, both of whom joined Exchange 25 years ago. Judge Tom Daly congratulated Samarneh, and Exchange member Michael Ashraf congratulated Spano.
Vice President Angela La Breglio thanked everyone for attending and for their ongoing support of the Yonkers Exchange Club over the years.
