New Rochelle-based rehabilitation and nursing facility earns five-star rating from federal agency

Dumont Center for Rehabilitation and Nursing Care, located at 676 Pelham Road in New Rochelle, ranks among the top nursing homes in the state, according to the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS), a division of Health & Human Services.

The federal agency bestowed its prestigious five-star rating upon Dumont earlier this year for the facility’s “superior level of care.” CMS rates nursing homes on a five-star designation, and a five-star rating means that Dumont Center is “much above average” compared to other homes in New York.

“This milestone is a testament to the staff at Dumont Center,” says Dumont Administrator Tzvi Barax. “A five-star designation can only be possible when you have staff that is caring and dedicated. This is something that we should all be proud of.”

The staff at Dumont consists of interdisciplinary teams that work together with each individual resident to address their needs.

“We provide the highest level of care possible, whether it is for our short-term residents or our long-term residents,” said Rafael Magdaleno, a physical therapist at Dumont. “When a resident comes in, all departments—nursing, recreation, administration, social workers, rehabilitation—meet as a team to get the full picture of how best to treat the resident. The most important thing is to make them feel at home and cover their needs.”

When you combine Dumont’s unmatched level of care with its state of the art facilities, special things happen.

“One of the things that makes us unique is that we have a 24-hour respiratory unit on the fourth floor, which allows us to meet the needs of our residents,” said Director of Social Services Tamika Greaves. “We recently had a female resident who was here for seven or eight months. When she came in she needed total assistance. After working with rehab and our interdisciplinary team, she was able to walk out of here with just a rollator—no ventilator or trach—at the end of July.”

Recreation Director Teresa Galbo says the feeling of accomplishment she experiences after a day at Dumont is unlike anything she’s experienced before.

“I’ve had other great jobs—jobs that took me to super bowls and allowed me to meet celebrities—but here, when I go home, I talk about my day and feel such satisfaction knowing that we are doing so much to improve the quality of life for so many.”
