Congressman Lawler’s Impressive Record on Affordability and Bipartisanship

Letter to the Editor:

I am compelled to respond to the letter-to-the-editor dated Sept. 8 submitted by Mark Lieberman. The assertions made in this letter are misleading and deliberately slanted to distort Congressman Mike Lawler’s impressive record on affordability and bipartisanship.

The Congressman has voted to strengthen medicaid for those in need and blocked any proposed cuts to social security and medicare. He personally fought to have the “Social Security Fairness Act” signed into law to protect retirees living in Westchester, Rockland, Putnam and Dutchess counties. He also authored six bills in the first bipartisan housing affordability law in 36 years!

Congressman Lawler personally negotiated a special provision to quadruple the SALT deduction, raising the SALT cap to $40,000 for five years with a $500,000 income cap and 1% growth. This has saved most families $4,000 this year and created a new deduction that allows most seniors to fully offset taxes on their Social Security benefits! This law also eliminated federal taxes on tips and overtime and boosted child tax credits.

All of this important work has helped lower basic household costs and build more homes for families.

Mr. Lieberman’s claim that Congressman Lawler supports “expensive MAGA policies” is patently untrue. In fact, the Congressman is recognized as one of the most bipartisan members of Congress. The Congressman is ranked third out of all Republicans for voting against his own party’s leadership and is rated seventh of all Republicans in disagreeing with President Trump on key votes.

In addition to Congressman Lawler’s tremendous legislative work, he has delivered for the residents for District 17 in so many other ways. His office has closed over 10,000 constituent cases and brought back over $80 million to the district to protect clean drinking water, modernize sewer infrastructure, upgrade roads and bridges and bolster public safety and police.

Congressman Lawler has earned my vote for re-election for the extraordinary work that he has done for my community.
