After More than Half a Century, Hall of Fame Coach Jan Mitchell Announces Retirement from Iona Preparatory

After more than five decades of shaping scholar-athletes and building one of the most successful track and cross-country programs in New York State history, Hall of Fame coach Jan Mitchell has announced his retirement from Iona Preparatory School.

Mitchell’s extraordinary career spans 51 years at Iona Prep, where he led generations of scholar-athletes to championship success while also serving as a dedicated educator. He also coached for 36 years at nearby The Ursuline School, helping to establish its cross-country and track & field programs and expanding opportunities for young women in the sport.

Under Mitchell’s leadership, Iona Prep athletes earned more than 800 All-County honors, won over 100 sectional championships and 22 Westchester County titles, and produced 87 All-Americans. His teams captured eight CHSAA championships, and many of his athletes went on to compete at the collegiate and national levels.

Mitchell has been inducted into multiple Halls of Fame, including the Armory Foundation, CHSAA, Iona Prep and Ursuline, and was named New York State Coach of the Year in 2023. Beyond athletics, he spent decades teaching social studies and European history, mentoring students both in the classroom and on the track.

“For nearly half this school’s existence, Mr. Mitchell has helped shape young men into leaders in the classroom and on the track,” said Iona Preparatory President Brother Thomas R. Leto, Ed.D. “His impact on our school and community is immeasurable.”

Athletic Director Ryan Mahoney added, “Coach Mitchell built a culture of excellence that defined generations of Iona Prep athletes. His leadership, dedication, and commitment to students will leave a lasting legacy.”

After 51 years of unwavering commitment, Mitchell will retire as one of the most accomplished and respected coaches in school and state history, leaving behind not only championship teams, but generations of students shaped by his leadership.

Iona Prep will honor Coach Mitchell at the school’s biannual President’s Thanksgiving Bash, which will take place on Thursday, Nov. 20, 2026.  For more information, visit: IonaPrep.org.
