A nor’easter with wind-driven rain couldn’t dampen spirits at MetLife Stadium Sunday as the National Football League and New York Giants recognized Yonkers High School Senior Myriam Areche.
“It was totally surreal to be standing on the field,” Myriam said. “It was nerve-racking and cool at the same time. I am so grateful for the opportunity.”
Myriam is a nominee for the NFL’s Latino Youth Honors. All 32 NFL teams select one male and one female high school senior football player who embody excellence, leadership and pride in Latino culture. Eight finalists will be awarded a college grant and a trip to the Super Bowl.
Myriam is a versatile triple threat for the Yonkers flag football team. She competes as a quarterback, wide receiver and defensive back. At Yonkers High School, Myriam is enrolled in the International Baccalaureate Program. Through Yonkers Partners in Education (YPIE), she’s studying the effects of invasive plant species in the water at Tibbetts Brook Park. Myriam also volunteers at a local senior center.
After the Giants and Titans wrapped up the first quarter, Myriam took the field and proudly held the flag of the Dominican Republic. With a loud, booming voice, the public address announcer introduced her to nearly 80,000 football fans as her image loomed large on the Jumbotron screens.
“I am proud on so many levels,” Myriam stated. “It is an honor to represent my culture, women, my sport and Yonkers. I was late coming to flag football; I started at age 15. I hope other young girls learn that it is never too late, if you stay focused, work hard and never give up.”
