With October bringing increased attention to bats and bat conservation, we wanted to highlight Sam Morgulas, a senior at Scarsdale High School who has developed a real passion for bats through his science research. Over the past year, Sam took that interest well beyond the classroom, researching, designing and building large “rocket” bat boxes to provide safe roosting habitat for local bats.
Sam worked with the Nature Center at Greenburgh and Westchester Land Trust as he developed the project and researched appropriate locations for the boxes. He put a tremendous amount of thought into everything from sun exposure and flight access to surrounding vegetation, predators and the needs of local bat species.
Since Sam’s project has involved conservation organizations and locations here in Westchester.
